Essential elements of traditional Ob-Ugric culture include nomadism, shamanism and the Bear Celebration.

The best-known Khanty writer is Yeremei Aipin (b. 1948), who is also a politician. His works Khanty, ili Zvezda utrennei zari [The Khanty, or the Dawn Star] (1990) and Bozh΄ia mater’ v krovavykh snegakh [Mother of God in Bloody-Red Snows] (2002) have been translated into Finnish.

The best-known Mansi author is Yuvan Shestalov (1937–‍2011), whose novel Terni eryg [Ugric Cradle] (1972) was published in Finnish (Ugrien kehto) in 1976.
